A composite restoration, also called a “white filling,” involves filling a tooth with a restorative material that is the same color as the natural tooth. When a patient has a cavity, the tooth must be prepared to receive the restorative treatment that will remove the decay, protecting the tooth from further damage and pain.
The part of the tooth affected by the decay, which is usually brownish in color, must be removed. Once this is done, a white synthetic material is applied to fill the hollow space left by the decay.
Root Canal Treatments
Why is this necessary?
A root canal is a dental procedure designed to remove infected or dead pulp from a tooth while preserving its structure. After removing the damaged pulp, the dentist carefully cleans and fills the canal. The tooth is then completely restored to the appearance and function of a natural tooth.
Root canal treatment typically takes one to two sessions. The procedure begins with the dentist administering a local anesthetic to numb the tooth and surrounding area. Once the area is anesthetized, an opening is made in the tooth to access and remove the pulp. The dentist then uses specialized instruments to clean, shape, and fill the canal before sealing it.
How is a root canal treatment performed?
A root canal treatment typically requires one or two sessions. First, the dentist administers a local anesthetic to ensure that the procedure is painless. Once the area is completely numbed, an opening is carefully made in the tooth to access the inner pulp. The infected or dead pulp is then removed, and the canal is cleaned, shaped, and filled using specialized dental instruments.
Next, the tooth must be restored to regain its strength and functionality. In some cases, if the remaining natural tooth is too fragile, a crown may be placed to provide additional support and durability.
Implants
What is it?
An implant-supported crown is designed to replicate the structure and function of a natural tooth. This involves placing a titanium root (dental implant) directly into the jawbone, where it acts like a natural tooth root. Once the implant is securely in place, an artificial tooth, or crown, is cemented over it, restoring both appearance and function.
When multiple adjacent teeth are missing, an implant-supported bridge may be used. Unlike traditional bridges, which require filing down the neighboring teeth for support, an implant-supported bridge relies solely on the implants for stability. This approach preserves the integrity of the surrounding natural teeth.
How are dental implants made?
Implant-supported crowns and bridges are complex surgical procedures that require careful planning and multiple appointments over several weeks. Digital imaging is a critical step in the process, helping to design the custom crown or bridge and guide the precise placement of the implant in the jawbone.
During the procedure, the patient is given a local anesthetic to ensure comfort. Depending on the complexity of the surgery, specialists such as oral surgeons or periodontists may collaborate with the dentist. Once the titanium implant is securely screwed into the jawbone, an abutment—a small post connecting the implant to the artificial tooth—is attached. This abutment serves as an anchor for the custom-designed crown or bridge.
